Two aspects of clonal cocoa work were carried out by BAL Plantations Sdn. Bhd.(Malaysia). The first concerned the choice of vegetative propagation methods while the second dealt with the selection and evaluation of elite clones. Yields of fan-rooted cuttings were shown to be better than those of fan buddings but the difference was insignificant. Because of the traditional familiarity with budding as a propagation method in the Malaysian plantations and its relatively lower cost and higher efficiency in propagation, budding was preferred to rooting of cuttings. Different cocoa clones were also shown to vary in yield performance as chupon and fan buddings. However, the erratic and low production of chupon materials posed a serious limitation on budding with chupon material. Hence, budding with fan material was considered as the currently most practicable vegetative propagation method for large-scale commercial plantings. In addition, rootstock influence on the yields of buddings was shown to be insignificant. Five of the selected clones evaluated appeared to be promising in yields and pod/bean characteristics. However, because of defect in trial design the results were somewhat imprecise and should only be accepted as indicative. Further work with better trial design, new selection criteria and wider range of selection base had been initiated
