The importance and competitiveness of soybean in the foreign trade of the Republic of Serbia | Značaj i konkurentnost soje u spoljnoj trgovini Republike Srbije

The research aims to examine the role andimportance of the soybeans as a veryimportant segment of the agri-food sector ofthe Republic of Serbia in total exports. Studiesto date have mainly addressed the importanceand competetivness of the entire agri-foodsector. The analysis used the revealedcomparative advantage (RCA), competitiveness growth index (RCA), index of netbusiness performance (RCA 2), index ofcontribution to the trade balance (CTB),Michaely index (MI), and Grubel-Lojdindex(GLI) for the period from 2010 to 2019. Allthese indicators are common tools formeasuring the level of external competitiveness at the sector level and its parts(divisions, product groups, products). Theresults show an increasing share of soybeansin total exports of the agri-food sector, followedby an increase in the contribution to the overalltrade balance and an increase in thecompetitiveness of domestic soybeans on theinternational soybean market, higherspecialization of domestic soybean productionand high cross-sectoral participation, as well asoverall economic growth of the entire economy.
