African swine fever (ASF) as one of the most economically significant transboundary diseasespresents a serious threat to pig production worldwide. The adverse epizootiological situation in theWestern Balkans region has resulted in the onset of the disease in Serbia as well.During the preparation for the early detection and diagnosis of the disease, clinical symptoms andpathomorphological changes in piglets experimentally infected with ASF virus were monitored.Experimental infection, clinical observation and necropsy were performed at the Federal Research Center for Virology and Microbiology (FICViM) in Pokrov, which is the reference institution of the RussianFederation for this disease.Clinical signs in infected pigs were: lethargy, loss of apetite, fever, mild hyperemia of auricles,bilateral conjunctivitis, difficulty getting up and moving. Animals died 7 to 9 days after infection.The following pathomorphological lesions were noticed at necropsy: enlarged andhaemorrhagicspleen; enlarged and diffusely haemorrhagic gastrohepatic, mesenteric and perirectal lymphnodes; ascites; edema of the wall and haemorrages in the wall and on the mucosa of the gall bladder;haemorragesin the renal medulla and pelvis; discrete haemorrageson bladder mucosa.During the necropsy, spleen and lymph nodes were sampled for laboratory testing. The presenceof AKS virus was demonstrated by direct immunofluorescence and real-time PCR.Recognition of the clinical course and pathomorphological changes, with an understanding of allaspects and specifics of the epizootiology of ASF, is of great importance in the early detection and controlof the disease.
