We monitored the effect of foliar applications of magnesium on yields and some qualitative parameters of grapevine cv. Zweigelt, locality Nosislav, South Moravia, Czech Republic, in three-year field experiment(2011–2013) The fertilizer was Epso Top (16% MgO, 13% S), applied 4× during vegetation (BBCH 15-19; 55; 75 and 83, respectively) at total rates of 1.93 kg.ha-1 Mg and 3.86 kg.ha-1 Mg (1.25% and 2.5% solutions). In a number of cases the year significantly affected the yields and yield quality. Grape yields (a 3-year average) increased with increasing rates of Mg by 7.6–11.2% over the unfertilized control. In the first two years the sugar content of the three treatments did not differ (20.0–20.9 °NM); in the last year it decreased in both of the fertilized treatments (17.3–16.6 °NM) in contrast to the unfertilized control (19.3 °NM). The contents of titratable acids and the pH of grape must did not differ significantly among the treatments (8.73–10.86 g.l-1 and pH 3.02–3.25, respectively). The content of Mg in leaves (% dry matter) increased during vegetation; and on a 3-year average it increased at the stage of grape softening (BBCH 83) with increasing rates of fertilizers as follows: 0.36% Mg (control) – 0.44% Mg (lower rate of Mg) – 0.48% Mg (higher rate of Mg). Basing on the results we can recommend foliar applications of the Epso Top fertilizer also in vineyards with a good supply of soil Mg, particularly because it stimulates grape yields
