The investigation of antimicrobial effect of lemon verbana (lippia citriodora) extract and ci̇tral on escherichia coli

Medical and aromatic plants, which are common used for treatment of different diseases from past to present, have been preferred comparing with other synthetic preservatives because of having some antimicrobial compounds.In this study, the antimicrobial effects of both lemon verbana (Lippia citriodora L. syn. Lippia triphylla (L'Her.) Kuntze, syn. Aloysia triphylla (L'Her.) Britton) and citral -which is the most found component in the plant- on Escherichia coli was researched. Lemon verbana extracts and citral were used as materials in the study and also Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 was obtained for the research. Fresh and dried plant samples were subjected individually to maceration and extraction processes. No-difference in the antimicrobial efficiency of neither fresh nor dried plant extract was determined. The bactericidal zone size in the minimum concentration of macerated lemon verbana (fresh) extracts was found as 0,9 mm whereas the zone size of citral in the minimum concentrate was 5,3 mm according to the disc diffusion method. Besides, zone occurrence was not seen around any of the other sample extracts. On the other hand, minimum inhibition concentrations of macerated plant (fresh) and citral were found as 100 mg/µL and 1 µL respectively according to the tube dilution method.
