Modeling the calorofic value of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) biomass on the elemental structure and NIRS calibration

The purpose of this study to determine the calorific value and elemental composition (CHNS) of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and modelling the biomass higher heating value (HHV) throughout the elemental composition of dry biomass. In addition improvement of the NIRS calibrations for spectral quantifying the HHV and also CHNS composition of the biomass was the other aim of the current study. The dry biomass of switchgrass has higher HHV with a desirable elemental composition according the chemical analyses. The HHV value of the switchgrass biomass varied between 15.7298-19.2592 MJ kg−1 depending on the genotypes. The carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur concentration of the biomass was stated as 39.28-45.26%, 4.82-6.10%, 0.24-0.56% and 0.03-2.41% respectively. The regression coefficients (R2) of the models developed for determination the HHV throughout the biomass CHN concentration were 0.9121, 0.9012 and 0.8979 respectively. The prediction efficiency of the constructed NIRS calibrations for spectral quantifying of the HHV and also CHNS was rather high. The standard error of calibration (SEC), standard error of prediction (SEP) and coefficient of determination (R2) of the calibration were determined for HHV 0.0645, 0.1634, 0.9706 C; 0.5358, 0.5644, 07968, H; 0.066, 0.0692, 0.8300, N; 0.0100, 0.0162, 0.9831 and S; 0.2173, 0.2419, 0.9166 respectively for the final NIRS calibration.
