Detoxification of aflatoxin M1 contaminated milks by clay

Aflatoxins are mycotoxins that are produced by Aspergillus flavus fungi group. There are 18 known chemical forms of aflatoxins; while aflatoxin B1, B2, G1 and G2 forms are more important for agricultural products, aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) form is important for milk. The only source of AFM1 in milk is aflatoxin B1 taken with feeds. In this study, detoxification of AFM1 contaminated-milks by clay treatment was aimed. In study, milk samples with different ratios of AFM1 contamination were used. After treated with clay it was determined whether or not aflatoxins levels decreased. Extract cleaned by affinity chromatography and AFM1 was detected and quantified by reverse phase HPLC and fluorescence detector. Significant result of the study is; while 0.1 g clay adsorbed all 6.5 ppb AFM1 in the 10 ml buffer solution, 5 g clay could hardly adsorbe all AFM1 in 100 ml milk containing 0.12 ppb AFM1. In conclusion; clays were found successful in adsorbing AFM1 in buffer solution medium, however not adequately successful in adsorbing AFM1 in milk medium, due to the specific components of milk.
