Determination of the nutritional values and some wild plants used as local fresh consumption in Gevaş (Van) district

In this study, the usage ways and nutrient contents of wild plants consumed as food by people in and around Gevaş-Van were investigated. It is found that in this region there are wild plants belonging to 10 families which consist of 19 taxa such as nettle (Urtica dioica L.), çiriş (Eremurus spectabilis BİEB.), watercress (Nasturtium officinale R.Br.), yemlik (Tragopogon reticulatus Boiss. & Huet), evelek (Rumex tuberosus L. subsp. horizontalis KOCH RECH.), it soğanı (Allium akaka S.G.Gmel. ex Schult. & Schult.f), mendi (Chaerophyllum macropodum Boiss), thyme (Thymus fallax Fisch. & C.A.Mey), mallow (Malva neglecta Wallr.), çatak soğanı (Allium shatakiense Rech. f.) kurt soğanı (Ornithogalum oligophyllum E. D. CLARKE), siyabo (Ferula rigidula Fisch. ex DC.), sov/soh (Heracleum persicum Desf), kenger (Gundelia tournefortii L.), ışkın (Rheum ribes L.), heliz (Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl), wild mint (Mentha longifolia (L.) HUDSON subsp. longifolia (L.) HUDSON), broadleaf plantain (Plantago major L. subsp. intermedia (Gilib.) Lange), boğa dikeni (Eryngium billardieri F. Delaroche). In the study, the wild plants were analyzed for their macro- and micro element concentrations (N, P, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn and Mn). Additionally, some food quality aspects (dry matter, moisture contents, total ash contents and protein contents) were also evaluated in the plant samples. It can be concluded that wild plants analyzed had great diversity for mineral compositions and other food quality properties, and had a richer content than some leaf consumed culture species.
