Determination of hexanal by solid phase microextraction method

In this study, the effects of Polydimethylsiloxane/Divinylbenzene (PDSM/DVB) and Divinylbenzene/Carboxen/Polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/CAR/PDSM) fiber types (2 and 3 phases), extraction temperature (35, 40 and 45 °C) and extraction time (30, 35 and 40 minutes) on the extraction of hexanal (HEG) by Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME) fiber were investigated. 5-Methyl 2-hexanone (0.4 ppm) was used as internal standard (IS) for quantification of HEG. In order to determine the level of linearity between HEG and IS, various ratios of HEG (0.2 ppb, 1 ppb, 10 ppb, 50 ppb, 100 ppb, 500 ppb, 1ppm, 2 ppm and 3 ppm) and IS (0.4 ppm) were added to hazelnut oil, and by applying the SPME technique the relation between variables (x = Concentration of HEG/Concentration of IS, y = Area of HEG/Area of IS) were evaluated by regression equation (y=ax+b) and correlation coefficient (R2). According to the R2 value (0.974) between HEG and IS, it was found that the most appropriate condition for extraction of HEG was 45 °C and 40 minutes. The results of GC-SPME analysis of standard addition of different concentration of HEG to hazelnut oil showed that the detection limit of HEG was 0.2 ppb. The evaluation of peaks obtained by GC-SPME of HEG showed that DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber gave appropriate results while PDMS/DVB fiber did not.As a result, SPME which is simple, fast, sensitive and solvent-free technique can be used to determine the HEG content that is recently evaluated as an indicator of oxidation in oils, and also the most appropriate extration condition is found to be 45 °C and 40 min.
