Effects of different site qualities on stand growth in some black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold.) afforestations in lakes district

The main aim of this study was to investigate how black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold.) which is commonly used in plantations in Turkey, grows under different site conditions in Lake District. The study was conducted at 10 different plantation areas which had different site characteristics, tilled with machines, planted with same row spacing and planted at least 16 years ago. The study was carried out with three replicates. Soil samples were taken from different soil depths including 0-5 cm, 5-15 cm, 15-30 cm, 30-60 cm and 60-100 cm by digging a soil pit in each sample plot. Also, coordinates, altitudes, aspects and slopes were measured, and reliefs and parent materials were recorded at each plot. Breast-height diameter and height of 30 trees in each sample plot were measured, then, a tree with mean diameter and mean height of each plot was sampled destructively for stem analysis. Breast-height diameter and height of 30 trees were calculated according to stem analysis for the age of 16.Soil texture, reaction (pH), organic carbon, total nitrogen and lime analysis were made on 132 soil subsamples, which were air dried in the laboratory.Results were compared statistically, and showed that there was a negative relationship between actual and potential acidity of the soil and height and diameter growth of the stand for the soil depth of 0-5, 5-15 and 15-30 cm. In addition there was a negative relationship between potential acidity, carbon concentration and tree height for the soil depth of 30-60 cm.
