Identification of externalities caused by reforestation and erosion control projects: the case of Balikesir province

Forest resources provide a large number of diverse goods and services to society every passing day. Some non-marketed goods and products are called as externalities. As a result of these goods and services positive or negative externalities may occur. Externalities affect countries in regional and global level.Therefore identification of externalities caused by forestry operations (harvesting, reforestratiration/afforestration, protection, planning, transportation, etc.) are of great importance. The aim of this study is to identify externalities of afforestration and erosion control projects in the province of Balıkesir. In this context, main data is obtained by project document, interviews and observations. In order to identify project externalities, using these data positive and negative externalities are formed. Then, from villagers living in afforestation project implementation region and group of experts who have knowledge about projects are asked to evaluate (totally agree/disagree, etc.) the identified externalities using questionnaires. In this study, documentation, content analysis, descriptive statistics and percentages were used as a method.Finally, the externalities of these projects were identified in accordance with the opinions of experts and villagers.
