Transfusion transmitted infections (TTI) are a major problemassociated with blood transfusion. Although the risk oftransfusion-transmitted infections is lower than ever, thesupply of blood products remains subject to contaminationwith known and yet to be identified pathogens. Only properdonor screening, sensitive screening tests and effectiveinactivation procedures can ensure the reduction and risk ofacquiring transfusion transmitted infections. This review, thusaddresses the changes that lead to the decreasing prevalenceof transfusion transmitted infection in India and also the futurestrategies to be adopted to eliminate the risk of new inbornepathogens in India.
