Age Related Changes in Neuronal Cell Packing Density of Occipital Lobe in Goat (Capra hircus)

The present study was conducted on left occipital lobe of cerebrum from 20 goat brains irrespective of sex. The Group-I comprised of goats between 9 to 12 months of age and Group-II comprised of goats of 13 months and above age. The method used for neuronal count was based on a computer assisted manual method involving cell differentiation in Nissl-stained sections under the microscope. All cell counts were corrected using an Abercrombie correction to adjust for the varying thickness among sections and shrinkage. It was noticed that the cortical depth did not differ statistically between the two groups for either total cortex or for any layer. The overall reduction of the depth in each layer in group II was by less than 1% compared to group I. Layer I and layer II was 265 μm thick in both the groups. Layer III was 730 μm thick and was the thickest among the all layers. Layer IV was 320 μm thick while Layer V was 425 μm thick. Layer VI was 600 μm thick, forming 23.7% of the cortical thickness. The cell packing density Nv, was greater in group I than group II for the total cortex depth (p<0.01). Similarly the cell packing density for layer II and IV was greater in group I than group II (p < 0.05). Nv was greater in group I by 6.4% for the total cortex, by 14.2% in layer II and by 14.8% for layer IV compared to group II. The results suggest that the occipital lobe as a functional unit has a different ratio of cell packing density in young and old age, which could have implications for the age wise differences in cognition and behaviour.
