The content and removal of macronutrients in cherries

It is important to know the optimal content and removal of mineral nutrients to provide plants with the necessary substances, but excessive fertilization should be prevented. The aim of the research was to determine the removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium for sour cherries (‘Latvijas Zemais 52’) and for sweet cherries grafted on vigorous and vigour-reducing rootstocks (cultivar ‘Meelika’ on the rootstocks Prunus mahaleb and Gisela 5). The measurements of removed plant biomass, sample collection and calculations were done at the Institute of Horticulture. The content of macronutrients in the plant biomass was detected at Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, at the Institute of Soil and Plant sciences. In the spring, the branches (annual and older) of the cultivar ‘Meelika’ grafted on Gisela 5 had significantly higher content of calcium, but biannual and perennial branches – higher content of N in the dry matter than other cherry cultivar rootstock combinations. In the summer, the sour cherries ‘Latvijas Zemais’ had a higher content of N and Mg in the leaves and annual shoots than the sweet cherry cultivar ‘Meelika’ grafted on P. mahaleb. The annual removal of macronutrients by pruning and yield per tree resulted in: ‘Meelika’/P. mahaleb – 24 g N, 7 g P2O5, 71 g K2O, 142 mg Ca and 90 mg Mg; ‘Meelika’/Gisela 5–17 g N, 7 g P2O5, 52 g K2O, 102 mg Ca and 78 mg Mg; ‘Latvijas Zemais 52’/ P. mahaleb – 22 g N, 6 g P2O5, 62 g K2O, 116 mg Ca and 119 mg Mg.
