The total length of the Dniester, one of the longest rivers in Europe, is 1362 km. The river basin covers two-thirds of the territory of Moldova and provides 80% of the country's population with drinking water. For Ukraine, this is the second most important river. In general, about 8 million people live in the Dniester basin. The basin of the Dniester River includes four hydrogeological regions: the hydrogeological province of the folded region of the Ukrainian Carpathians, the Volyn-Podolsk artesian basin, the area of fissure waters of the Ukrainian Shield, and the Black Sea artesian basin. Of these, all four are represented in Ukraine and one (the Black Sea artesian basin) in Moldova.
