Inhibition of Verticillium Dahliae Kleb. In vitro with essential oils and homemade fungicides

Verticillium dahliae is a tomato pathogen which causes a tracheomycosis disease. The pathogen never penetrates host cells, remaining in the xylem vessels until the plant is dying. In current agricultural practices, it is very important to manage pests and pathogens using highly efficient methods with minimum damaging externalities. In this issue, the concept of environmentally friendly methods of control is noticeable. There is a growing tendency for research institutes to find the possibility and benefits of natural products application, due to the concerns relating the safety of synthetic fungicides. Usually, the tested substances are plant extracts, plantbased essential oils and vegetable oils in controlling plant pathogenic fungi. In the present paper we have tested a series of essential oils (EOs) dilutions and homemade fungicides on growth of Verticillium dahliae mycellium. Results show that cinnamon EO was effective at all tested concentrations. Cloves and thyme EOs showed strong inhibitory effects at 1% concetration and cidal effects at the maximum one. Citronella, fennel, lemongrass, palmarosa and oregano EOs either inhibited or killed the fungus.
