Economics of oil palm pests and Ganoderma disease and yield losses

Crop losses due to pest and disease infestations are major threats to agricultural development. For export oriented commodities such as palm oil, the problem of pests and diseases (P&D) cannot be viewed in isolation because it can affect international cost competitiveness as well as revenue losses. Among others, economic implications of some major P&D of oil palm in Malaysia include bagworms, Oryctes, termites, nettle caterpillars, rats and Ganoderma disease. Pests and Ganoderma disease spread is the most concern to the producers. If prevention and protection are minimal, pests' infestation and Ganoderma disease incidence and spread could by pass the thresholds, leading to yield and revenue losses to both the producers and the country. The paper will attempt to evaluate the economics of some prevention measures and strategies currently adopted in term of costs and benefits as well as in estimating current and forecast yield and revenue losses.
