Altitudinal variation of species composition in the dipterocarp forest at Bukit Karung, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia

An ecological study was carried out in the dipterocarp forest at Bukit Karung, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Four plots of 50 x 30 m² were established in different altitudes ranging between 300 and 900 m above sea-level. The altitudinal difference between each plot was 200 m. The results showed that the total number of tree species with diameter at breast height greater than 10 cm was 184 with the percentage total basal area of 0.64%. The total number of tree species increased to 327 when saplings were also counted. Among these species, dipterocarps were found to be the most dominant with 138 trees ha-¹ representing 0.14% basal area and comprising 31 species and 6 genera. The six genera of the dipterocarps are Dipterocarpus, Dryobalanops, Hopea, Parashorea, Shorea and Vatica. The relationship between the floristic variation and the soil nutrient status and altitude is also discussed in this paper.
