An evaluation of a progeny trial of 40 half-sib families of Shorea leprosula established in the Kemasul Forest Reserve, Pahang, was conducted. The progenies were taken from plus trees originating from five forest reserves, i.e. Sungai Menyala, Bukit Rengit, Bangi, Gombak and Trenggun. Height increments and survival rates after 48 months were evaluated. Most of the families showed low survival rates with the highest recorded in Family 13 (71.9%) and the lowest in Families 1, 19 and 21 (43.8%). There was a significant difference in mean total height increment among the progenies with the highest total height increment observed for Family 1 (2.9 m) and the lowest for Family 9 (1.4 m). High variations in both survival and height increment were observed within and between the families. Environmental effects such as light and microclimatic conditions might have contributed to the high variations.
