Results are reported from four field trials carried out in 2016-2019 differing in precipitation and temperature with spring barley, which was grown after sugar beet. The effects of pre-crops for sugar beet, as a direct pre-crops for spring barley, and methods of soil tillage after sugar beet harvest are evaluated. Sugar beet is one of the most desirable pre-crops for spring barley, especially when it comes to production for the malting industry. It is a water demanding crop. If sugar beet is grown after a pre-crop that is equally water demanding and also leaves a large amount of organic matter, the water deficit increases, which is particularly noticeable in years with a water deficit.
