Preliminary study on antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of Cynometra cauliflora leaves at different extraction temperatures

Cynometra cauliflora or locally called as Nam nam is a native plant of Malaysia, grown mainly in Northern Peninsular Malaysia especially in Perak. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of extraction temperature on the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of C. cauliflora extract. Extraction of C. cauliflora leaves was carried out at different temperatures (40, 60 and 80°C) using water prior determination of its antioxidant activity and total phenolic content. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content were determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and Folin-Ciocalteu method respectively. Highest percentage of inhibition was detected in the C. cauliflora extract from extraction temperature of 60°C (93.13%) compared to others, (91.20% for 40°C and 88.44% for 80°C) using DPPH method. The same result was obtained for total phenolic concentration where the highest concentration was recorded in extract of 60°C temperature (258.16 mg GAE/ 100 mg), followed by 40°C (257.36 mg GAE/ 100 mg) and 80°C (255.63 mg GAE/ 100 mg).
