Determination of herb yield and essential oil content of some basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) populations

This study was carried out to determine herb yield and volatile oil content of some sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) populations. A field experiment in randomized block design with three replications was carried using plant material of nine basil genotypes selected from a population including more than 80 genotypes collected from different regions of Turkey. In the study, the plants were harvested two times at flowering stage and plant height, fresh herb yield, dry herb yield, dry leaf yield and essential oil content were evaluated. Significant differences among the genotypes studied were determined for all traits evaluated. Plant height, fresh herb yield, dry herb yield and essential oil content values were found to be within the ranges of 17.16-45.33 cm, 195.00-383.99 g/plant, 22.21-46.85 g/plant, 2.46-25.99 g/plant and 0.25-1.06%, respectively. In terms of fresh herbage yield and essential oil content, the genotypes of Tokat and Adana were promising genotypes.
