英语. Despite being rich in biological diversity, Cuba depends on genetic resources for food and agricul ture from other countries to facilitate its plant breed ing programmes. The ratification of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture by Cuba in 2004 was an important step towards safeguarding food security for the country, enabling national agricultural research institutions and germplasm banks to have facilitated access to those genetic resources which are part of the multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing of the Treaty. This article explains the reasons for the ratification of the Treaty by Cuba and describes the process that led to the ratification.
