Allelopathic potential of a weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides (MART.) Griseb

The present work was done to determine the presence of inhibitor(s) of germination and seedling growth of some test seeds such as mustard and rice. The methods of Datta and Chakrovarty (1977) were followed with necessary modifications. Only the stem and leaf were used to prepare extract and leachate to examine the phytotoxicity of the plant. The concentrations used were expressed as 1:2.5, 1:5, 1:10 and 1:20 so as to indicate the proportion of plant material and water in respective dilutions. In mustard bioassay, complete inhibition of germination and seedling growth is noted, 1:10 with leaf extract, 1:5 with leaf leachate and stem extract. In rice bioassay, complete inhibition is noted only at 1:2.5 with leaf extract, stem extract and leaf leachate, i.e. rice is more resistant to inhibition of germination and seedling growth. The study reveals that A. philoxeroides contain allelopathic potential.
