The use of an aeroponic culture was investigated to perfect a systematic and rapid method of screening for root characteristics. Results show that data on root characters obtained from the aeroponic culture are reproducible, indicating the merits of the aeroponic culture over root boxes or field sampling in screening large numbers of rice cultivars and breeding lines efficiently and systematically. Moreover, one cycle of testing only requires 45-50 days. The growth trends of root characters obtained in the aeroponic culture were similar to those obtained from the field, root box, mylar tube, and greenhouse studies. Thicker root diameter was highly correlated with field resistance to drought at vegetative phase of growth; deeper root length, thick root diameter, low root number, and a high root/shoot ratio were highly and significantly related to the field drought resistance at the reproductive stage. Drought-resistant varieties generally have deep and thick roots, and high root/shoot ratios, but low root number
