Digitaria sp. and Paspalum sp. were the dominant weeds in the conventionally prepared fields and the zero tillage plots while in the stale-seedbed plots easier to control broadleaf weed species were present. When herbicides were used for post plant weed control, significantly higher yields were obtained from the stale seedbed plots than from the plots prepared conventionally and the zero-tilled plots. When no weeding was done, little or no yield was obtained regardless of the method of land preparation. The time of land preparation had no effect on weed density and weed biomass 2 weeks after crop emergence (WAE) but the weed flora was affected.
