Monitoring adult densities of rice leaffolder (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) with sex hormone and light traps for improved insect pest control [study conducted in the Philippines]

Monitoring Cnaphalocrosis medinalis with sex pheromone traps and field observations revealed that a trap catch peak was followed by peaks in larval density and plant damage. This suggested that as insecticide spray to be efficient, should be applied very soon after a peak trap catch. Observation made in another season showed that moth catch peaks were also followed by peaks in infestation and plant damage. Light trap catches did not correspond to pheromone trap catches, and so were not useful indicators of the pest population. An evaluation of different spraying times relative to pheromone trap catches of C. medinalis also was hampered by a low pest population. The results suggested that one treatment at or soon after the peak trap catch controlled larval density, and that damage was reduced by spraying 1 or 2 weeks after the peak
