The indica-japonica differentiation of rice cultivars - a review

Oka, H.I.
Cultivars of O. sativa are divisible into the indica and japonica types although there are various intermediates. Multivariate analyses of character variations can demonstrate their differentiation into the two types, but there is no single discriminative character. Phenol reaction of the hull may be taken as a criterion with a relatively low probability of misclassification. Pathogenic races of the blast fungus were also found to be differentiated into such groups. The hybrid-sterility relationship are complex and are not discriminative between the two types, although their genetic bases have been analyzed. The wild progenitor of O. sativa shows no trend to indica japonica differentiation among its varieties. A study of intermediate wild-cultivated plants suggesetd that the plants might have gradually become differentiated as they were domesticated. Crossing experiments with a wild strain proved that the wild progenitor had genetic potentiality to derive indica-japonica differentiation
