Observation on the growth habit of Syrian and Jordanian Landraces of barley

A collection of barley landraces from 33 sites in Syria and Jordan was grown off-season under flood irrigation in 1981 in a summer nursery at Shawbak in Jordan. A high degree of dormancy was evident; germination was greatest in progenies from very hot, dry, and southerly locations. Unexpectedly, a number of populations showed a cold requirement to induce the reproductive phase of growth. Within the samples which headed, there was a great variability in the date of maturation.
