The region including Shanghai municipality, Zhejiang province and southeastern parts of Jiangsu province located in the lower course of Yangtze River, has limited land but large population. In the past 30 years, reformation and development of cropping in rice have been stimulated through breeding and intensive farming. At present, the rice cropping system is characterized as follows. Multiple cropping in one year is being practiced with a cropping index of grain crops as high as 220-240. There is rather integrated crop rotation system, with miscellaneous types of crop species and varieties. Some places have practiced intercropping, underplanting, undersowing and mix sowing which are beneficial to diversified economy as well as to benign circulation of ecosystem. The technical key for the development of multiple cropping of rice are: on the basis continual farm-land constuction, selecting and breeding of varieties with early maturity, high yield, multi-resistance and good quality should be done with greater attention put on rational combination of various varieties with different maturity
