Effects of photoperiod and inductive cycles on flowering and some characters of Glycine max (L.) Merrill var SJ.1 and SJ.2 [soybean varieties]

Plants were grown in 10 inches pots under extended natural light condition to a maximum of 16 hours until certain developmental stages depending on the assigned inductive cycles treatment. Changes in flowering and morphological structure were found with daylengths. The longer the light period, the longer the vegetative growth is and the higher the number of flowers per plant. Climbing behavior was clearly seen in those receiving 16 hours light period. The highest pod number were obtained at 12 and one half and 13 hours daylengths for SJ.1 and 13 hours for SJ.2. The seed weight in both varieties was not affected by photoperiod. Vegetative and reproductive growths were also influenced by the age of plants prior to light induction. The 15 inductive cycles gave the highest pods number per plant while the five inductive cycles caused a decrease in the number of seeds per plant
