Biological control of Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. by Trichogramma maidis Pint. et Voeg. on corn for seed production in southern Switzerland

The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. is bivoltine in Switzerland south of the Alps. Both generations must be controlled to prevent economic injury in corn for seed production because the plants of inbred lines are weaker than those of hybrid varieties and therefore, they suffer more from larval attack. Trichogramma maidis Pint. et Voeg. proved to be an effective egg-parasite, reducing the average larval attack by 70 per cent. This efficiency can be obtained by releasing a total of 300 000 parasites per hectare, whereby three different developmental stages (old pupae, prepupae and young larvae) are mixed and released at 50 points per hectare. Our experiments demonstrate that the pest can be controlled by releasing 100 000 and 200 000 parasites at the beginning of the first and second European corn borer gerneration respectively
