A study of coconuts and coconut oil markets: the case of Trinidad and Tobago

In view of the current declining trend in production of the coconut industry of Trinidad and Tobago, examines the cost - revenue structure and profitability, forecasts the future demand for and production of copra and identifies the major obstacles to rapid growth in the industry. A stratified, random survey of 9 farms, using a prepared questionnaire was conducted. Data with respect to land use and characteristics of crop; wage rates and employee age structure, machinery, agricultural practices, pests and diseases, costs, revenue and farmers' attitudes were gathered. The most important influence on profits was the level of output as influenced by tree population and yield per acre. Under the 1978 cost/price situation a minimum output of 1,500 nuts per acre was necessary to profit. The major obstacles associated with production decline are old-age of plantations, poor agronomic practices, disease problems and inadequate supply of labour. Copra supply and demand forecasts indicated a significant gap in the supply for local needs in 1990. The study makes recommendations for the rejuvenation of the industry
