An introduction to the work and organization of IRETA, which is closely linked with the University of the South Pacific School of Agriculture, and functions in research, extension and training in agriculture for the 11 countries it serves. The staple indigenous foods are listed with their distribution and uses, these include coconut palm (Cocos nucifera), sago palm (Metroxylon sago and M. solononenes), breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis), banana (Musa spp. Eumusa and Australimusa), yams (Dioscorea alata, D. esculenta), taro (Colocasia esculenta), and giant taro (Alocasia macrorrhiza). Programmes involving tree crops, food crops and livestock aim to upgrade the traditional methods of agriculture and introduce improved varieties and cropping systems. These include collection and characterization of coconut and root crop germplasm and development of a cereal/legume/root crop sequence
