The inheritance of dwarfness in pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) and its response to photothermal environments

The genetics of plant height was studied in a pigeonpea cross using two mathematical models. The 3-parameter additive-dominance model proved inadequate whereas the non-allelic interaction model with 6 parameters was more suitable for the additive X dominance gene interaction involved in plant height. Other agronomic characters were tested using this model, the results indicating that not all the characters have a similar mode of inheritance. Plant height and its components were investigated in three crosses involving dwarf genotypes as one of the parents. The different dwarfs showed different modes of inheritance, which is also true for other crop plants reported in the literature. A third investigation, on the effect of photothermal environment on the growth of 5 dwarf pigeonpea and Atylosia sericea, a related genus, used three photoperiods and the screening method developed is described. High day temperatures were induced by using polyethylene "Monsanto 602" sheets on a low-cost bamboo frame. Long day/high temperature increased plant height, time to flowering, internode length, middle leaflet size and total shoot dry weight in all six genotypes tested
