With the use of waste water and sewage sludge as fertilizers inorganic and organic toxic substances reach the soil. Their transport behaviour in the various soil horizons is dependent on solubility, hydrogen ion-content, redox potential and adsorption-desorption behaviour. The presence of strongly sorptive organic matter favours enrichment of the toxic substances in the upper most soil layers. However washing out of the substances leading to contamination of the ground water must be taken into account. The basic transport mechanism of these substances are presented.
