Grain drilling is today possible with a row-width as little as 8 cm. Investigations were carried out to evaluate the feasibility of an even narrower spacing by using packer-wheels to make seed furrows. The main problem is to avoid the adhesion of soil. Soil tank experiments with different types of packer wheels which were covered by different materials and provided with positive wheel-slip showed that it is possible to reduce the row-width down to 5 cm independently of the water content of the soil.
