[Will the tropical forests survive? - Prospects and necessary reactions]

On the basis of existing information about deforestation in the tropics the article discusses major underlying causes and circumstances of this destructive process. With a view to available options for forests conservation measures reference is made to the fields of land-use planning and rural development, improvement of forestry development institutions and forest utilization patterns, coordination of forestry sector programmes and motivation of rural people for environmentally sound land-use practices. The experiences of more than two decades of internationally supported efforts to conserve and develop the tropical forest resources show that - due to the ever increasing population pressure on remaining forest lands - the prospects for the natural forest cover in the third world are rather dim. Instead of isolated activities the governments of the countries concerned, therefore, are called to take without delay the necessary decisions and practical steps to formulate and efficiently implement coherent and comprehensive programmes for the conservation and development of surviving natural woodlands compatible with the needs of rural target groups. Continued international support is considered of vital importance for those programmes.
