Aquaculture and agriculture - competition or complement?

The relationship between agriculture and aquaculture are marked by both competition and complementation. And this not only, because the products emanating from both production processes may be in direct competition, but similar requirements exist frequently also with respect to the factors entering into the production process. In many areas of the world, aquaculture seems to be superior to agriculture because of high revenues and profits derived from it, but many aquacultural production processes require also high investments and operate at high costs levels. A combination of both economic cultures enables a more efficient utilization of the operating means and materials and generates additional revenue at relatively low investments and costs, so that more consideration should be given to this combination of production schemes in view of the background of the presently strained world nutritional situation.
