Economic aspects of different plant protection intensities in winter wheat

To test the economical effectiveness of plant protection method and the practicability of different economic injury levels field trials with increasing plant protection intensities were carried out in winter wheat (cv. 'Kanzler') near Witzenhausen in two consecutive harvest periods (1984 and 1985). Use of herbicides was risky under economical aspects. Even when the weed density (121-147 plants/square metre, mainly camomile) was above the economic threshold applications of Oxytril M or Anitop induced yield losses. Control of camomile by Oxytril M, Anitop and isoproturone containing herbicides (Arelon, Tolkan) was good. However, the use of isoproturone brought no returns covering the costs, even when in addition to camomile the density of grass weeds with up to 66 plants/square metre had exceeded the threshold. Treatment with isoproturone increased leaf and ear infestation of wheat by powdery mildew. Under our climatic conditions it was not possible to forecast the incidence of eye spot disease by symptoms present on the stalk or on the sheath at the time of fungicide application (EC 31-32). Application of CCC and chemical control of eye spot disease, powdery mildew and ear diseases were economically effective.
