Can the application of sewage sludge still be recommended?
1987
Menz, M. (Hessischer Bauernverband, Friedrichsdorf (Germany, F.R.). Referat Agrarwirtschaft)
Municipal suppliers mainly prefer using sewage sludge in agriculture for cost reasons. The farmers regard these offers very sceptically, especially because of lacking risk coverage. The sewage sludge ordinance of 1982 cannot eliminate the risk from harmful substances. From the crop husbandry and farm management viewpoint, fertilizing with sewage sludge hardly offers any advantages, even a number of disadvantages regarding production techniques. Only if the described minimum requirements are fulfilled, the application of sewage sludge is acceptable for agriculture. The transformation concept presented for an orderly and supervised sewage sludge utilization in agriculture could, if proven worthwhile, be applied on a large scale. A basic solution to the problem is only possible by reducing harmful substances discharged into the sewage.
