Effect of exchangeable sodium percentage on the growth, yield and chemical composition of chickpea

Germination was poor and delayed by 3 to 4 days with the soil exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) of more than 15 in 'C 235' chickpea (Cicer arietinum Linn.). Dry-matter yield 30 days after sowing, grain and straw yields after harvest and protein content of grain decreased with an increase in the soil ESP. The grain yield reduced to 50% at an ESP of 19. Increasing soil ESP increased Na and Fe but decreased K, Ca, N, Mg, Zn and Mn contents of plants. Sodium and Fe contents of the plant increased, while those of Ca, K, N and Zn decreased with age of1462plant. There was no effect of age on Mg and Mn contents of plants.
