Helminthosporium spp. and Fusarium spp. - an increasing hazard for young cereal crops

The occurance of the seed borne diseases Helminthosporium spp. and Fusarium spp. in the seedlings of cereals has become more of a problem in the last few years. The link between the prohibition of application of mercury based seed-dressings and the increase of seed borne fungal diseases, especially by Pyrenophora teres, in cereals is also discussed, as is the application of a new generation of seed dressings. While seed dressings based on DMI's, furans or BCM's often are not effective enough against Helminthosporium spp. and Fusarium spp., these diseases have been shown to be quite well controlled by prochloraz plus carboxin. Seed dressings based on pr0812ochloraz and carboxin may be considered adequate substitutes for the mercury based dressings in the control of Helminthosporium spp. and Fusarium
