Coverage of literature on mycotoxins by computer databases and comparison of this coverage with the TDRI in-house index facility

The order of coverage of literature on mycotoxins by major online databases was BIOSIS, 19.755%, CAB, 19.083%, MEDLINE, 16.238%, CAS, 13.250%, PASCAL, 9.610%, SCISEARCH, 9.169%, AGRICOLA, 8.214% and AGRIS, 4.680%. The maximum number of references, 8138, were covered by BIOSIS. The results on the currency of literature showed that only three databases: AGRICOLA, CAS and MELINE had the facility to retrieve material according to year of publication. MEDLINE had the shortest lag period of 2 months, whereas the other two databases, AGRICOLA and CAS, had the lag period of 4 months and 5 months respectively. The AGRICOLA database added during 1978 up to 67% of the literature published in that year. The figures for CAS and MEDLINE were 64% and 67% respectively. The total retrieval costs of the five online databases studied were: Pound Sterling 622.98 for BIOSIS, Pound Sterling 552.12 for CAS, Pound Sterling 509.77 for MEDLINE, Pound Sterling 498.38 for SCISEARCH and Pound Sterling 175.50 for AGRICOLA. When the total retrieval costs per thousand references printed were examined, the order of2046 expensiveness was SCISEARCH, CAS, BIOSIS, MEDLINE and AGRICOLA. The overlap figures for the five databases were: 20% for AGRICOLA, 35% for BIOSIS, 77% for CAS, 9% for MEDLINE and 65% for SCISEARCH. The extraplated overlap figures for the five databases showed that of the total 4554 relevant references retrieved, 1906 overlapped and 2748 were unique. From the TDRI Card Index a total of 1211 relevant references were retrieved for the same period. Therefore, it could be said that an online service should complement the resources of an inhouse faci
