Rooting and growth characteristics under different seedling raising methods and temperature conditions after transplanting in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Expansion in acreage of machine transplanting encounters often unexpected problems of poor early growth of transplanted rice seedlings. Experiments were conducted to understand rooting and growth characteristics after transplanting under low temperature conditions. Seedlings, two Japonica and two Indica/Japonica varieties, were raised for 25 days, 35 days and 45 days in the seedling tray for the rice transplanter and for 45 days in the conventional seedbed nursery. The seedlings were subjected to the daily mean temperature of 13 deg C (the day temperature was 18 deg C and the night temperature was 8 deg C; this is expressed as 18/8 deg C), 15 deg C (20/10 deg C), and 17 deg C (22/12 deg C).
