Yield response of transplanted rice in the mangrove swamps of Warri, Nigeria to nitrogen and spacing

The interaction between plant population and level of nitrogen in transplanted rice was investigated for 2 years during the wet season (June to November) at the mangrove swamps of Warri, Nigeria. Eight individual plant populations and three levels of nitrogen were compared in a replicated split-plot design. There was no significant interactions between spacing and nitrogen level. Rice grain yield increased with increasing N application. The application of 78.4 kg N/ha produced significantly higher grain yield than the control plots. Plants spaced at 20 x 5 cm, 4: 1 regularity (1,000,000 plants/ha) gave the highest yield and were found statistically superior to tho1085se spaced at either 50 x 12.5 cm or 25 x 25 cm (160,000 per ha) and at 20 x 20 cm (250,000 per
