Detasseling and carbofuran for the control of corn borer, Ostrinia furnacalis (Guenee) [Philippines]

Occurrence of the different insect pests was observed to be prevalent in the area during the conduct of the study. The first to attack were corn seedling maggots (Atherigona oryzae, Malloch) and they were observed infesting the corn plants during the seedling stage. Corn semi-looper (Chresodeixis chalcites, Esper), armyworms (Spodoptera mauritania, Fabr.) were also noted from seedling stage up to whorling stage. Corn aphids (Aphis maidis, Stal.) were observed during detasseling and silting stage. Infestation of corn borer (Ostrinia furnacalis, Guenee) and corn earworm (Helicoverpa armigera, Hu1818bner was noted from whorling stage up to maturity stage. The corn silk beetles (Monolepta bifasciata, Hornstedt) were only present during the silking stage. In all treatments, detasseling plus carbofuran had showed efficiency over lepidopterous pests especially corn borer and corn earworm. However, carbofuran alone effectively lowered the lepidopterous pests before tasseling stage while detasseling alone is effective at the start of tasseling stage to maturity. Result of the actual yield, indicated that by detasseling only without insecticide treatment was the most economical. Although it was the detasseling plus carbofuran treatment that effectively controlled the pests from seedling stage up to maturity than other treatments, there was no significant difference found with the detasseling alone in terms of grain yield of c
