Insecticidal activity of indigenous plant extracts against bollworms (Helicoverpa armigera Hubn.)

The crude aqueous extracts of Tinospora rumphii and Albutra (Arcangelisia flava) vines, acetone extracts of jatropha seeds (Jatropha curcas) and petroleum ether extracts of bagras stem (Eucalyptus deglupta) reduced feeding of bollworm. The relative amount of frass from bollworms fed with crude extracts of said plants was significantly lesser than from bollworms fed with control bolls. The relative larval weight and length were not significantly affected by the various plant extracts. However, bollworms fed with treated bolls were smaller and shorter than control. Crude acetone-extracted oils from jatropha seeds controlled egg-hatching by 76%, while petroleum ether-extracted oils from yell1768ow ginger (Cucurma longa) had 67% efficacy. Its volatile oil extracts had each 20% egg control. The aqueous extracts of makabuhai and albutra, petroleum ether extracts of eucalyptus (bagras), bitaog (Calophyllum inophyllum), subusob (Blumea balsamifera) were not ovicidal, while those from sweet flag (Acorus calanus) and garlic vine (Pseudocolymna alliaceum) were slightly inhibitory. Field testing of plants with antifeedant properties showed that aqueous extracts of yellow ginger and makabuhai had comparable efficacy with check insecticide, Decis 2.5 E.C., at low bollworm infestation (118 DAE). However, at high infestation, makabuhai was virtually not antifeedant evidenced by very poor bollworm control, while yellow ginger had about 38% efficacy.
