Fruit development in sweet pepper (Capsicum Annum L.) in relation to soil moisture and nitrogen fertilization

Investigations were carried out at the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore to study the fruit development in sweet pepper in relation to soil moisture and nitrogen fertilization. It was observed that the highest fresh and dry weight of fruits, fruit volume and pericarp thickness were recorded with irrigation at 40 per cent available soil moisture (ASM) closely followed by irrigation at 60 per cent ASM. Maintenance of either very high (80% ASM) or very low (20% ASM) soil moisture regime had an adverse effect on fruit development. Nitrogen fertilization considerably increased the fresh and dry weight of fruits, fruit volume and pericarp thickness up to 180 kg N per ha.
