This paper gives a survey of former taxonomic classifications of the field elm in Yugoslavia, the number of species and subspecies of the field elm in Europe and Yugoslavia, a revision of taxonomic values of some previously described units of the field elm, a systematic supraspecies classification of the Ulmus L. genus, a survey of the new systematic classification of the field elm in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in neighbouring regions as well as a description of phytocoenological relations of the field elm in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
